I'm interested in evolution from a genomic perspective at the intersection of micro- and macroevolution. In my PhD project, I use next-generation sequencing to investigate the evolutionary history of Arabidopsis (Brassicaceae), a genus well known for its use as model systems in all areas of plant research. Part of my project involves estimating divergence times for Arabidopsis, and in the process also for Brassicaceae. In a project embedded in the DFG SPP 1529 "Adaptomics", I work with Polina Novikova (Nordborg group, Gregor-Mendel-Institute Vienna) to unravel the complex history of speciation and gene flow of Arabidopsis based on nuclear and chloroplast sequence data. Finally, I'm investigating a natural introgression zone between two species of the genus, Arabidopsis arenosa and A. lyrata, in the Austrian Alps, where tetraploid A. arenosa introgresses into A. lyrata. This hybridization is hypothesized to have allowed tetraploid A. lyrata to colonize siliceous bedrock, a habitat that is otherwise not adapted to.
