We currently offer various Master- and Bachelor-Projects:

Please take a look at our Master-Labrotation Flyer

The projects in our department aim at a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of a functional nervous system, in particular growth and navigation of axons. We focus on the role of cell adhesion molecules, cytoskeletal components, and intracellular signalling molecules mediating between these two components. These projects are basic research but ultimately aim at contributing to the development of novel therapeutic approaches, e. g. for axon regeneration (patents). Our preferred model system is the developing retina of the chick and mouse embryo and our main approaches are elaborate cell and tissue culture systems. Our research moreover involves a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art techniques ranging from molecular biology/biochemistry and micro-/nano-technology to live imaging microscopy.

The department is member of COS (Center for Organismal Studies, emerged from the former Institute of Zoology) and IZN (Interdisciplinary Center for Neurosciences). The Neuenheim Campus provides not only a stimulating scientific environment but also a wide range of high-end facilities such as the Nikon Imaging Center (NIC), electron microscopy core facility, RNAi screening facility, deep sequencing core facility etc.. We offer a supportive mentoring and a motivating atmosphere in our department. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply any time, also before having completed their bachelor- or masters project.
