COS PhD Program

!!! Important: the COS PhD program is no longer accepting new students. Students now apply to the HBIGS graduate program (read below) !!!

Applicants must hold a Master's (or equivalent) degree in biology, biochemistry, medicine, chemistry, or related fields. Applications are welcome even if the required degree has not been awarded by the time of application as long as the degree will be conferred before formal beginning of the PhD thesis. Applications to the PhD program have to be submitted prior to the formal start of the PhD project.

Applicants who are not native English speakers need to demonstrate adequate competence of the English language.

Application Procedure for the HBIGS program

Students enter the COS PhD program through the Hartmut Hoffmann-Berling International Graduate School of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Heidelberg University (HBIGS). HBIGS currently offers two application tracks: regular application and fast track application.

Regular Application

Following online submission of the application, eligibility and qualification will be checked (this might include a pre-interview), after which all application files will be distributed among COS faculty members for further evaluation. Short-listed candidates will be invited to Heidelberg for a written subject test and an interview. The final decision about admission will be taken by the HBIGS Executive Board. Admission letters will be sent out shortly after the interview process.

Fast Track Application

A fast track application (no shortlisting, no interview, no subject test) is offered separately for MSc students of Heidelberg University

- who were enrolled in the MSc Molecular Biosciences or MSc Molecular Biotechnology program of Heidelberg University,
- who are already accepted as a prospective PhD student by a member of the HBIGS faculty,
- who have finished their respective MSc program within two years, and
- who have been in the top 25% bracket of students in their year at the start of their MSc thesis.

External Students

The structured PhD program offered by COS is open to students of other faculties ("external students") that fulfill the formal requirenments and have been accepted through the COS/HBIGS admission procedure (regular track).
