COS PhD Program

Selection and admission through HBIGS involves three steps: evaluation of written application, subject test, personal interviews.

Written application

Applications are subjected to an initial screening by the admissions committee and evaluated based on academic qualification and recommendations. Please refrain from inquiries regarding the status of your application, you will be informed as soon as the results are known.

Subject Test

The subject test is conducted by HBIGS in Heidelberg. Style and level of the multiple choice questions are similar to the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Subject Test in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology. Free sample questions from the GRE subject test are available on the GRE website. See here for details on the subject test topics and preparation.

The interview process includes personal interviews with group leaders and a 30 minute panel interview conducted by three HBIGS faculty members. During the panel interviews, the candidates will give a 5-7 minute oral presentation of their current research project ("chalk talk"). This oral presentation is then followed by a question and answer session.
