Successful without sex– the enigmatic biology and evolutionary history of
Cardamine bulbifera (Brassicaceae)
The formation of seeds is regarded as one of the most important achievements in seed-plants, which allows them to radiate so successfully into many different ecosystems and habitat types. The consequences of clonal reproduction, however, are commonly associated with genetic uniformity and limited adaptability. But Cardamine bulbifera successfully occupies wide distribution area with vegetative reproduction only. The wide distribution range from Italy to Norway and from Ireland to Russia indicates adaptation to a broad climatic conditions.
