Our research is focused on structure/function relationships and the evolution of extracellular matrix and signaling molecules. In particular, we are interested in the evolution of complex features, as of organelles, and of early extracellular matrix. In our research we are applying biochemical, microscopic and structural techniques as well as systems biology approaches using functional genomics and proteomics.
Our model organism is the cnidarian Hydra, which represents one of the most basal metazoan animals. Hydra has been a model for cell biology and regeneration for decades and the availability of genome data and of transgenic animals has opened up new systematic and functional approaches. The simplicity, evolutionary impact and regenerative capacity of Hydra offer fundamental research possibilities with important implications for higher metazoans, including humans.
